of central intelligence, until friday, that was david petraeus, learned about this investigation into these emails that were described as harassing emails that were sent from paula broadwell to another woman. he learned about them on election day, on tuesday. on wednesday, he notified the white house. on thursday morning, the national security adviser, tom donovan, made the president aware, general petraeus was here, the former general, retired general, was here on thursday where he offered his resignation. the president slept on it overnight. called him back on friday and accepted the resignation. as far as the individual who rereceived the allegedly harassing emails from paula broadwell, our nbc's pete williams, our justice correspondent is reporting this afternoon, she was a civilian employee of the defense department contractor, not someone in the government or military. now about the benghazi angle of all this. of course david petraeus, as head of the c.i.a. was due to testify late next week, thursday, before the house and senate intelligence committees about what happened o

, that david petraeus signed off on, the director of cia wrote the assessment, that's what she was doing. there are people in the white house, particularly the president, but a lot of support staff feel as if susan rice has gotten a raw deal on this. that she has been a political punching bag, if you will, over the last month and a half because of the presidential campaign, because of other things. so, this point when mccain and graham did their thing, that's why the president felt he needed to stand up for his u.n. ambassador. there's -- obviously he was giving off an indication he's willing to have a confirmation fight if they want to have one. but there's more to this, chris. there's more to this. this goes back to mccain and obama, they never -- they never had a warm relationship after the 2008 election. mccain, i think, has been tougher on the president than in the reverse. the president has sort of not taken the bait when mccain has hit him and hit him pretty hard. and i think this was an indication the president is ready to sort of fight back when it comes to mccain. this is not a

four star general and c.i.a. chief david petraeus, here he is, quit last week after admitting that he had an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. now, paula broadwell allegedly sent threatening e-mails to jill kelley who is a "tampa socialite" who did charitable work for the military. broadwell apparently thought that kelley was also having an affair with petraeus. and upon receiving broadwell's e-mails, kelley contacted the fbi which began investigating. now, jill kelley also has hired crisis communications expert judy smith. she has worked with monica lewinsky with kobe bryant and with former senator larry craig. and that all has a lot of folks scratching their heads. why would a woman who was the target of a nasty e-mail or two need a reputation fixer? well it turns out that while investigating petraeus, the fbi uncovered 20,000 to 30,000 potentially inappropriate pages of documents mostly e-mails that kelley exchanged with general john allen. and who is general john allen? he is the top u.s. commander i

the affair that ended david petraeus' career as head of the cia. nbc reports the unraveling of the affair began as a cyber harass the probe late this spring. that's when jill kelly, a close friend of the petraeus family, reported she had received several anonymous and harassing e-mails. the e-mails referred to kelly socializing with other generals in the tampa area, suggesting it was inappropriate and should stop. and warning her to stay away from petraeus. ultimately will the fbi traced the e-mails back to petraeus' biography paula broadwell. and during the investigation, they discovered e-mails from pa tray to us broadwell that showed the two were having an extramarital affair. there's still a lot we don't know about the petraeus resignation. why would paula broadwell send threatening e-mails to jill kelley? did broadwell have access to confidential information? while there are legitimate questions that need to be answered, some on the right are back to their old tricks trying to turn this into something it's not. >> this is an administration that is practicing now serial deception. thi
